The Importance of Off-Season Training

There’s much debate about the merits of off-season training. Endless practice won’t ensure anyone will go pro, but training during the off-season can definitely make you a better player. Off-season training typically consists of weight training for strength, conditioning for stamina, attending basketball training camps to enhance one’s skills, and playing AAU or other advanced development leagues to stay on top of your game.

Why Off-Season Training Matters

Off-season training allows players to hone their skills, as well as, return to regular season games faster, stronger, and more agile than the competition. Without training outside of regular basketball season, players return sluggish, are more prone to injuries, or need a few games to get back in the groove of things.

Training your basketball skills during the off-season helps athletes increase their overall skills, strength, and conditioning, and prepares them for the more rigorous and intense training that is likely to take place during the season. Not to mention, it prevents athletes from regressing to their pre-training levels which can happen surprisingly fast.

Some Concerns with Off-Season Training

While it’s true that off-season training can certainly help improve basketball players’ entire game, it can come at a cost. Injuries due to over-training, stress, and burnout can happen to players of all skill level and age. Burnout is the most likely to take place during offseason work on basketball skills and can occur in even the most disciplined players.

In sports kinesiology, burnout is the physical, mental, or emotional exhaustion of an athlete. Even though burnout isn’t as common in younger players, it can and does occur. If you notice any problems with player concentration, feelings of being overly worried, or the player losing interest in basketball activities, it may be a sign that the player needs a break from the action. Alternatively, playing a different sport such as soccer during the off-season will allow players to keep up their aerobic fitness and improve their footwork for when they return to the court.

Keys to Successful Off-Season Training

As with any other type of training, the key to getting the maximum benefit from off-season training is to train intelligently. Basketball trainers recommend splitting up off-season training into different phases which breaks up the monotony, ensures that players aren’t pushing too hard, and balances out skill development and physical fitness.  Contact us online to schedule basketball training and keep checking back for the latest information on our basketball camps and clinics.
